Development and eSports board members have met with the Taiwanese government in the hope of becoming the sixth country to recognise competitive gaming as sport. The Taiwan eSports League in collaboration with Taipei’s Department of Economic Development have submitted an appeal to classify eSports as an ‘indoor sport’. If successful, eSports ventures would be eligible to secure government funding. The move would bring Taiwan in line with South Korea, China and the US.

Despite a population of only 23-milliion, Taiwan has become a driving force in eSports. Both ahq and Flash Wolves made it to the quarter finals of this year’s LoL World Championships. In fact, Taipei’s city mayor, Ko Wen-je is a huge supporter or eSports and an avid LoL player himself.
