Malaysian ICT custodian Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDeC), previously known as Multimedia Development Corporation, has announced the appointment of Sidek Hassan as its new chairman effective May 1.vSidek Hassan succeeds Abdul Halim, who has served MDEC as chairman for 13 years, MDEC said in a statement.

Mdec NEU 1Sidek Hassan was the Chief Secretary to the Government from 2006 to 2012 and is currently the chairman of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas). He began his career in the Administrative and Diplomatic Service on April 15, 1974 as an assistant director at the International Trade Division, Ministry of Trade and Industry (Miti). He has extensive working experience within Miti, MDeC said. He was appointed Deputy Secretary-General (Trade) on Jan 19, 2001 and later Miti Secretary-General on Oct 24, 2004.

Sidek holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) Degree in Public Administration from University of Malaya and Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from New Hampshire College in the United States. Outgoing chairman Halim played a key role in the development of the ICT industry, especially in the development of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC Malaysia) project and Digital Malaysia programme.
He is also widely known among his peers as the local champion for the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (Apicta) since it was established.


MSC Malaysia is an initiative to boost the ICT industry in the country, while Digital Malaysia aims to transform the country into a ‘digital economy’ by 2020. Prior to MDeC, Halim served as the chairman of the Employees Provident Fund Board. Throughout his career, he has held various notable positions such as the Malaysian Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and also Chief Secretary of the Government. MDeC recently underwent a name change from Multimedia Development Corporation to Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation. This is to reflect the company’s mandate and goal: For Digital Malaysia to drive the nation’s digital economy in a holistic manner.
