Android social gaming and app store platform WePlay has launched via Google Play for SingTel subscribers in Singapore. Singapore-based telecom SingTel and US mobile game publisher PlayPhone announced a partnership to develop the Asian mobile game distribution portal in November.
“Discovery of games is a big problem,” said SingTel’s WePlay Director G. P. Singh. “Current app stores are not doing it well.”
As reported earlier, WePlay will also be preloaded on SingTel handsets in Singapore and across the APAC region, including Australia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand, and feature carrier billing for game purchases.
PlayPhone will provide titles from the company’s development partners as well as maintain the distribution platform’s technological infrastructure. WePlay has 150 games available on launch, with 150 more titles planned for release on the portal.
“With PlayPhone, we have a very strong partner in building a global community of mobile social gamers,” said SingTel’s multimedia chief Cheong Hai Thoo. “SingTel aims to bring exciting digital content and engaging mobile experience to our customers across Asia and we are keen to work with local and international developers to do so.”
