Chinese smartphone users

In a press briefing yesterday, a spokesman from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said that Chinese mobile Internet revenues grew by 56.8 per cent for the first half of 2013.

MIIT’s Zhu Hong Ren, speaking with reporters about government efforts to bolster the Chinese communications industry and encourage domestic consumption, also highlighted that China’s 400 million microblog users helped drive overall ecommerce growth to 38.5 per cent for the year.

The ecommerce sector has been expanding rapidly in China, which also saw earnings of 1.4 trillion RMB (US$190 billion) and 66.5 per cent growth in 2012.

The spokesman, outlining the view that information consumption in China has become an economic hotspot, also stated that sales of smartphones, smart TVs and other interactive consumer electronic devices were up by 25 per cent for the year.
