In the fourth quarter of 2016, Chinese enterprises gained four seats among the top five smartphone brands in the Indian market.
According to the report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, the South Korean smartphone giant Samsung still topped the Indian smartphone market with 24% market share, followed by four Chinese smartphone makers. Vivo ranked second with 10% market share; Xiaomi and Lenovo both gained 9% market share and Oppo gained 8% market share. Meanwhile, India’s local mobile phone companies were expelled from the top five list for the first time.
Chinese mobile phone companies held a total of 46% market share in the fourth quarter of 2016, which was nearly half of the Indian smartphone market. The report also revealed that Chinese mobile phone companies gained 51% market share in India in November 2016, which was the highest point over the year.
Counterpoint Research said that the main reasons for the growth of Chinese mobile phone companies in India were strong market strategy and channel promotion as well as better management.
However, India’s high-end smartphone market was still dominated by Apple. The report said that for mobile phones with prices above USD450, Apple held 62% market share. During the fourth quarter of 2016, Apple ranked tenth in the overall Indian market by market share.
