Hundreds of game developers from China and Indonesia gathered at the Century Park Hotel, Jakarta yesterday, for an annual event to discuss the future of Indonesia’s gaming industry. The event was pioneered by the China-ASEAN Mobile Internet Industry Alliance (CAMIA) in partnership with Baidu Indonesia. It brought together companies, startups and entrepreneurs working in the field of mobile game and app development. As a follow-up to last year’s event in Bangkok, Bao Jianlei, Director of Baidu Indonesia, stated, “The event is in line with Baidu’s mission to develop the mobile Internet ecosystem, including the mobile gaming industry in Indonesia.”
Indonesia was chosen for its rapidly growing market for mobile games. Based on existing data, the industry has experienced 120 per cent hike in revenue, cementing its position for the fastest growth in Southeast Asia.
Baidu also used the occasion to introduce MoboMarket, an alternative application store for Android users. “In Indonesia, we present MoboMarket as an application store with strong local characteristics. Developers can utilise this to distribute the games they (have) created, so that it can easily reach users in the country,” said Bao. Built in partnership with local developers, MoboMarket was first introduced in February 2014. According to the company, as of June 2015, more than 500,000 apps are available at the store, with more than 1,000 of them produced by Indonesian developers. The company also claimed that MoboMarket has been downloaded 10 million times with more than 4 million active users.
