The TV content and consumer group in Malaysia and Southeast Asiann Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad is converting its Supersport channel 808 into a dedicated eSports and gaming channel called eGG or Every Good Game, a now dedicated 24/7 eSports channel in the Southeast Asia region. Fans of eSports will be delighted to know that they can enjoy popular eSports tournaments like League of Legends, Dota 2, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, StarCraft II and many more on this channel through via Astro and Astro on the Go on eGG channel 808 in Malaysia starting June 2016.
Astro was the first in ASEAN to broadcast live on television The International 5 Dota 2 Championship in 2015. The broadcast of Ti5 was hugely popular with the younger demographics thus encouraging Astro to broadcast more eSports tournaments and capturing millions of viewers. The media group believes that eSports viewing is best suited on bigger screens so that the fans can enjoy their favorite events live in full HD together with fellow fans just like watching a live football match. Unlike traditional sports where fans follow specific teams and players, eSports fandom and loyalty are tied to the content and game itself; building a community of connected fans, adding an element of social engagement and buzz online.
Lee Choong Khay, Vice President of Sports at Astro said, “From trendy to mainstream, eSports is a growing global phenomenon among the millennials and is expected to reach over 218 million audience worldwide by year end 2016. Enjoying booming popularity among a growing community of eSports fans, we believe that a dedicated 24/7 eSports channel, eGG will play a pivotal role in bringing together a connected ASEAN community of eSports fans. eGG plans to partner with main game organisers and developers to bring live top tier global tournaments and on demand content featuring pubstomps, gaming walkthrough, expert guides, documentaries, game house tours and weekly highlights”
eGG channel 808 will be made available for Free to all Astro and Astro on the Go customers in Malaysia starting June, 2016.
Naturally, the company would need a number of people to host these contents which is why Astro will be hosting an open audition later this month. Taking place on 14 May at the All Asia Broadcast Center (AABC) in Bukit Jalil, Astro welcomes both local and international talents to the audition although individuals from outside of Klang Valley and Malaysia may submit videos if they not able to be at AABC personally.
While eSports and video games are definitely fun activities for most of people, TV production is a serious business. Hence, it is not surprising that Astro has roped a number of its existing Supersport hosts as part of the audition’s judging panel including Adam C, Reuben Kang, and Michelle Lee.
